LED Outdoor Lights

The times of having to unscrew an outdoor wall light every few weeks just to change a dead light bulb are gone. That is because today, outdoor areas and indoor areas can be lit via  LEDs.

LED outdoor lights offer:

  • High energy savings: 90% saving in comparison to traditional light bulbs of the same brightness

  • Longer lifespan: up to 50,000 hours of maintenance-free service

  • Immediate, 100 % brightness: important for motion detectors and burglary protection

  • High switching resilience: on and off on a regular basis, e.g., no problem in passageways

Which protection class do my LED outdoor lights require?

LED outdoor lights are designed to withstand various challenges they may encounter. They must endure the presence of mosquitoes, which are drawn to the luminous glow they emit. They also have to endure snails that crawl over ground spike lights. Additionally, outdoor lights must withstand harsh weather conditions, such as rain relentlessly beating down on their stainless steel housing, or being buried under a meter of snow overnight.

Moisture poses a significant problem for many outdoor lights, but the extent of this issue varies depending on the location within the property. For instance, a roofed outdoor wall light may only occasionally come into contact with water, while a pond light is constantly exposed to water.

Different outdoor lights require specific IP (ingress protection) ratings, depending on where they are installed. The IP ratings determine the level of protection provided. For example, IP44 is commonly used for outdoor lights, offering protection against foreign bodies with a size greater than or equal to 1mm and safeguarding against splashing water. In contrast, pond lights necessitate an IP68 rating, ensuring they are dustproof and protected against continuous submersion. Many recessed floor lights utilize IP67, indicating their capability to withstand temporary submersion during heavy rain. To determine the appropriate IP rating for a specific outdoor light, refer to the "Protection class" line in the product details.

The table below provides an explanation of the various IP codes:

Digit IP X 4 Solid particle protection
0 No protection
1 Effective against solid foreign objects ≥ 50 mm
2 Effective against solid foreign objects ≥ 12,5 mm
3 Effective against solid foreign objects ≥ 2,5 mm
4 Effective against solid foreign objects ≥ 1 mm
5 Dust protected
6 Dust tight
Digit IP X Liquid ingress protection
0 No protection
1 Protection against dripping water (vertically falling drops)
2 Protection against dripping water when tilted at 15°
3 Protection against spraying water
4 Protection against splashing of water
5 Protection against water jets
6 Protection against powerful water jets
7 Protection against temporary immersion
8 Protection against continuous immersion

How many watts does my LED outdoor light require?

The brightness of a light source can no longer be determined solely based on its energy consumption in watts due to variations in the luminous efficacy and processing quality of LEDs. Instead, the lumen value is now considered the standard reference for measuring brightness, which can be found in the product details of every LED outdoor light and LED light source.

For practical LED outdoor lights like wall lights, path lights, or outdoor ceiling lights, a brightness level of 500-1,000 lumens is generally desirable. Achieving this level of brightness typically requires an energy consumption of approximately 7-15 watts. In comparison, an incandescent bulb would consume around 40-75 watts to produce a similar level of brightness. This highlights the significant potential for energy savings offered by LED lighting solutions.

When it comes to outdoor decorative lights, there are no specific guidelines regarding brightness requirements. The main focus is on creating a beautiful lighting ambience. As a general rule, these lights typically emit around 10-20 lumens while consuming approximately 1 watt of energy. LED decorative lights designed for outdoor use often leverage solar energy as their power source, resulting in negligible electricity costs.

By utilising LED lighting technology and considering lumen values rather than wattage, both practical and decorative outdoor lighting options offer significant energy savings and enhanced lighting experiences.

What types of LED outdoor lights are there?

You don’t miss out when you illuminate your property with LED outdoor lights - they come in all shapes, designs and colours. If you want to keep your old outdoor light, just screw a LED light bulb into a conventional light.

  • LED outdoor wall lights often come with a stainless steel case. This robust material is, as well as being a high-quality synthetic material, optimal for exterior use.  There are many high quality brands of wall lights featuring sensor technology, e.g., those from Steinel.

  • LED path lights have an advantage over traditional path lights as LED technology makes new, flat designs possible.  Of course, classical-inspired designs can be combined with modern LEDs too.  Very appealing combinations can be found from Philips in the “Robin” product series.

  • LED floodlights ensure good visibility when entering a driveway - with significantly lower energy consumption than traditional floodlights. For products like this, you can always trust brand names like Osram.

  • LED recessed lights can be mounted at driveway entries and building façades and offer a decisive advantage: using of long-lasting light technology, there is no need to worry about fumbling about getting the bulb out of the recessed floor light, for many years to come.

  • Just like traditional variations, outdoor ceiling lights come with LED light technology too – ideal for covered terraces. Here too it stands the test of time. Enjoy the best light quality, free from any worry of having to change the light bulb.

  • Today, countless decorative lights with an LED that are used in outdoor areas no longer require a power connection. The minimal amount of energy consumption makes it possible for them to be powered via solar energy, or with batteries.  Among the decorative lights, there are gorgeous string lights and flexible rope lights. Many decorative articles have RGB colour-changing functions on command. This can either be a control on the light itself or done via remote control.
