Staircase lighting
Safety and aestheticsA well-lit staircase increases home safety, as steps are clearly recognisable and easy to walk on. In addition, light turns stairs into a breathtaking piece of architecture - both within the four walls and in the garden.
Our top recommendations
Stair lights for every application
Stairs can be illuminated in very different ways. The primary aim is always to make steps clearly recognisable in order to reduce the risk of accidents. However, staircase lamps also create an appealing ambience, e.g. through indirect lighting with LED strips or by selecting a luminaire design that perfectly matches your own furnishing style.

Wall lamps for the stairs
It is particularly important with wall luminaires in the staircase area that residents ascending or descending the stairs are not dazzled. This is why most staircase lights for the wall have a screen that allows the light to shine indirectly or a translucent diffuser, e.g. a shade made of satinised glass.
Tip: A flatter design should be chosen, especially for narrow staircases, so that the light does not protrude too much into the accessible area of the staircase. Thanks to the compact yet energy-efficient LED lighting technology, there are numerous flat LED wall lights.

Pendant lights for the stairs
Staircases, spiral staircases and stairwells become a stylish architectural element with pendant luminaires, because the creative designs and classically beautiful luminaire shapes are at eye level. If the pendant luminaires emit light all round, they also support the general staircase lighting.
Tip: If only one pendant light is used, not all steps may be evenly illuminated and clearly recognisable. It therefore often makes sense to supplement the lighting concept with additional stair lamps.

Staircase lighting with spotlights
Multi-flame spotlights can significantly support staircase lighting with customised spotlights. Here too, it is important to check the alignment carefully from every angle - especially when climbing up, but also when descending, the light must not dazzle or create annoying shadows that could obscure the edges of a step.
Tip: Directional lighting can create cast shadows, especially when daylight no longer falls into the staircase area, which may not clearly emphasise the accessible area of the steps. For safe staircase lighting, the spotlights should therefore be aligned so that the light softly and evenly illuminates each step.

Staircase lighting with LED strips
Adhesive strips with LEDs permanently attached to them, known as LED strips, set the scene for architecture like no other light source! Thanks to their flexibility, the narrow strips can be mounted almost anywhere, on the steps as well as on the handrail. They are available in different lengths and some can even be cut to size.
Tip: LED strips can provide very good step marking, especially if they are mounted underneath each step edge and illuminate the entire length of the step.

Recessed wall lights for the stairs
Recessed wall luminaires parallel to the staircase make the structure of the steps clearly recognisable and at the same time illuminate them beautifully. Recessed wall luminaires next to each step or at regular intervals of just a few steps are ideal. They are attached at ankle height. There is no danger of bumping into them, as the recessed luminaires are set into the wall.
Tip: If you are in the early construction phase or are renovating, make sure you have enough power outlets.

Ceiling lights for stairs and stairwells
Ceiling lights on the top landing are a common way of safely illuminating stairs. Wide beam angles are required for uniform, bright general lighting. LED panel lights provide ideal staircase lighting, too, as they radiate broad-beamed, even and glare-free light.
Tip: While there are clear specifications for lighting quality, brightness and more in the commercial sector, with private staircases and stairwells you have the choice of choosing exactly the light that you like best. A warm white light colour of <3,300 Kelvin is particularly popular for domestic staircases.

Smart staircase lighting enables a high degree of customisation and convenience. Depending on the product, the light can be conveniently dimmed or the colour adjusted at any time - by smartphone, remote control, motion sensor or voice. As smart home lighting is based on LEDs, it is as effective as it is economical, as LEDs efficiently save energy.

Sensor-controlled staircase lighting increases safety, burglary protection and convenience - the light switches on automatically when you approach the stairs. Tip: For the switching time of a motion detector, measure the time it takes the slowest occupant to walk the path comfortably and without rushing.

The combined corridor and staircase lighting ensures greater safety and a more inviting and attractive interior.

Large stairwells and staircases in general offer plenty of scope for design, e.g. with imposing chandeliers.
