Lamp shades are often seen as a decorative element. However, lamp shade main purpose and benefit is to diffuse or redirect the light from the bulb and protect your eyes from the bulb's glare. Without a lamp shade, the bulb's light goes out equally in all directions and can strain your eyes.
Lamp shades are important because they add personality to any room and can positively transform the style and atmosphere. Beneficial purposes also include lamp shades diffuse and redirect light from the light bulb, protecting your eyes from any glare. In turn, this results in a more stylish and relaxing ambience. Lamp shades can also be used to create focused light and pools of light, such as above the dining table.
Feather dusters are a great way to get rid of dust in and around a lamp shade. Other cleaning methods include combining warm water with a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid and using a microfiber cloth to gently wipe clean the shade. This method is suitable for lamp shades made from solid materials such as glass and metal. Before putting the lamp shade back in place, ensure that it is dry. For lamp shades made from gentle materials such as textiles or fabric, we advise avoiding using water and any other liquids to prevent damaging the lampshade.
White lamp shades and translucent lamp shades let the most light through and are the most functional at illuminating an entire room. Lamp shades made from thin fabrics also have a similar effect. On the other hand, with darker-coloured and opaque lampshades, light is only emitted from the top and bottom, which adds a sense of drama to the room and is ideal for accent lighting.
The shape that adds the most light to a room is drum lamp shades. Drum lamp shades direct most of the lamp's light out through the top and bottom of the shade. Round shapes are perfect for placement over a table lamp or floor lamp and can also be used for pendant light fixtures. Drum lamp shades provide ambient lighting, exposing more light than other shapes.
Unfortunately, lamp shades are typically not made from recyclable materials. However, there are multiple ways to transform old lamp shades to give them a new use rather than throwing them away. For example, if the lamp shade materials are glass or wood, rather than something fragile like textiles, consider attaching a sturdy material to the opening and turning it into a bin.
Fitting a new lampshade is very easy. Please ensure that the fuse is switched off and secured against being switched on again during the installation. For free-standing lights, ensure that you have pulled out the plug.

Floor lamps, table lamps and pendant lights all have replaceable lampshades. The important thing is that the light has a threaded sleeve lamp holder, i.e., a lamp holder with a thread and a cap nut or screw ring on the outside. It is usually sufficient to look at the lamp holder to see whether the lampshade is replaceable.
To determine what size lampshade a lamp needs it is best to consider some measurements. The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one-third of the total height of the lamp. For example, if the lamp base is 6 inches (15.2cm), the shade should be at least 12 inches (30.5cm) wide. If the total height of the lamp including the bulb is 24 inches (61cm), the lamp shade should be 8 inches (20.3cm) tall. Top tip: If you are replacing your old lamp shade with a new one you can use the measurements of the original lamp shade to help you with dimensions.
Lamp shades with a reversible gimble allow your lamp shade to be used for table and floor lamps and hanging ceiling light fixtures.
Finally, it's also important to consider the following if you're looking to replace the lamp shade for an existing light:
a) What type of light do I need for the lamp shade?
Most of our lamp shades are suitable for table, floor and pendant lights. However, some lamp shades may only be suitable for pendant light fixtures.
It is always best to check the product specifications or contact our customer service specialists.
b) Which base type is used for the existing light?
Our lampshades are compatible with E27 bulb fittings. If you're using a B22 bulb, you can simply purchase a ring reducer (available under accessories)
A reducer ring is the perfect solution when the ring of the lampshade is too large for the light fixture's bulb fitting. For example, some lamps may have an E27 fitting, which you can reduce to the size of a B22 fitting. No wiring or electrician is required, just simply attach the ring to your existing light socket. A reducer ring is cheap, practical and functional.
Watch out for our Mix & Match options, which include two different table lamp bases, a floor lamp base and a pendant light fixture. Mixing and matching your lamp bases with different shades allows you to create a personalised design for your interior. A new base can transform the look of the lamp itself. We are excited to offer you these four options, which you can purchase with your new lampshade.
