A classic design by Poul Henningsen - Pendant lamp PH 2/1

The PH 2/1 pendant luminaire was designed on the principle of the reflecting three-shade system, which directs most of the light downwards. The shades are made of three-layer, mouth-blown opal glass and have a glossy effect on their outer surface, while the inner surfaces are matt sandblasted, thus allowing a soft light distribution. The arrangement and shape of the shades are chosen so that the light illuminates the room without glare.

The design was created by Poul Henningsen, who from 1925 until the end of his life created unique lamps with the Danish lamp manufacturer Louis Poulsen, all of which followed the requirement that design gives form to light. The creation of a luminaire begins and ends with light. Louis Poulsen pursues this vision and characterises the harmonious balance between craftsmanship and innovation.

Henningsen was not only a designer, but also an architect, actor and journalist, but his professional life was mainly focused on lighting design. His pioneering work on the relations of light structures, shadows, reflections and light rendering laid the foundation for the theory of light, which is still used by Louis Poulsen today.
