Discus is actually made of real slate stone. Cut into extremely thin sheets with water jets, stone can be bent and pressed onto a textile backing to create lampshades. The partially translucent veneer creates unique patterns in the shade, and the diffuser on the underside also allows the light to be emitted downwards homogeneously and without glare.
