Good to know

Correctly illuminate trees & plants

Depending on the application, you can remember: an outdoor spotlight with around 200 lumens is sufficient for a small bush up to 1.50 metres high. To illuminate a small tree, an outdoor spotlight should emit around 600 lumens. As far as light colour is concerned, the following applies: daylight white emphasises blue-green foliage colours, warm white emphasises brown-red leaves.

IP protection class for vegetation lighting

Protection class IP65 is sufficient for free-standing surface-mounted spotlights. On the other hand, recessed spotlights in the ground that illuminate the tree must have at least IP67 protection. This protects them against temporary submersion.

Smart tree lighting with smart spotlights

As part of the smart home, there are numerous possibilities, e.g. coupling with separate motion detectors, creating light scenes and, above all, complete operation via app, voice or - depending on the system - with remote control.

Tree lighting with solar

Solar lights work without cables. As the tree lighting is not safety-relevant, you can rely on the battery charge without hesitation. The lights can usually be set using a timer or twilight sensor.

Illuminating trees from below

A lush tree crown invites you to make it look particularly vivid and voluminous. But the tree trunk itself can also be staged as a linear, vertical design element. If the trunk has a clearly structured bark, it is worth emphasising the texture. Remember: wide-beam luminaires (flood, approx. 60° to 100° beam angle) are more suitable for the treetop, whereas a narrow-beam luminaire (spot, up to max. beam angle) is better for the trunk. 45° beam angle). The interplay of light and shadow: incomparably beautiful!

How can you illuminate a tree from below?

Surface-mounted tree spotlights

A single upward-facing spotlight emphasises the tree crown in a three-dimensional way and emphasises the depth. Several overlapping cones of light reduce the shadow cast, making the treetop appear more voluminous.

Ground spike lights

Ground spike lights offer the advantage that the positioning and direction of light can be changed as required. This becomes particularly important as the tree grows and its dimensions change.

recessed floor lights

Recessed ground lights blend almost invisibly into the garden landscape. As they can be partially submerged in water, they require at least Protection class IP67, high-quality underground cables, effective drainage and a suitable gravel bed for drainage.

Lighting in and on the treetop

If the tree has a dense, spherical or umbrella-shaped crown, this can be emphasised in the dark to set the scene for the property. Many trees lose their greenery during the cold season. However, the bare, filigree branches can also have an enchanting effect and also offer numerous mounting options for decorative lighting ideas.

Which luminaires are suitable for illuminating the treetop?

Pendant lights for the tree

Pendant lights have an atmospheric and stylish effect. It is important that the branch is thick enough to support the weight of the pendant light. They should also never be hung from the top of a branch, as this can damage the tree. Hanging lights for the tree generally have an IP44 protection rating.

Light nets in the tree

Light nets utilise the volume of trees and bushes to give them an all-round sparkle. This invites you to look and relax, which is why light nets are often found in the outdoor areas of restaurants, where they inspire people to sit together for hours. You can also do this at home.

Tree lighting with fairy lights

The branches are perfect for decorating with fairy lights or lanterns. They are lightweight and can also be hung from thinner branches. At the same time, they are so flexible that they can decorate the entire treetop. Outdoor light chains also generally have IP44.

Illumination of shrubs, bushes and hedges

Illuminated shrubs, bushes and hedges can significantly enhance the visual dimension of the garden. The eye wanders from one green highlight to the next. It is particularly important to pay attention to the light emission of hedges bordering the garden. If you illuminate a hedge, you may not also illuminate the neighbouring property. In particular, avoid shining light into neighbouring windows. Disturbing light emissions from tree and property lighting often cause neighbourhood disputes.

Which lights belong on shrubs, bushes and hedges?

outdoor spotlight

As with the illumination of trees from the ground, shrubs and hedges also look very atmospheric in the light of spotlights. Individual spotlights emphasise the foliage with a play of light and shadow. Overlapping beams of light make it appear more voluminous.

Paulmann Plug & Shine

Creative garden design without limits: This is what Plug & Shine from Paulmann offers. The weather-resistant LED system can be installed without specialist knowledge and can be extended at any time: all Plug & Shine components are simply plugged and screwed together.

Pillar lights

Pedestal lights are available with approx. 40-50 cm the smaller version of the path lights. Pedestal lamps are used on balustrades or on the ground - also in the vicinity of bushes, hedges and shrubs. Depending on the model, they emit a spot-like or all-round light.

Additional tip: Outdoor sockets

Outdoor sockets expand the possibilities for leisure activities in the garden. In addition to an electric barbecue or lawnmower, a notebook or mobile phone can also be connected, for example. The outdoor sockets can be concealed inconspicuously near bushes and shrubs and are often available as a socket/path light combination.
