Correctly illuminate trees & plantsDepending on the application, you can remember: an outdoor spotlight with around 200 lumens is sufficient for a small bush up to 1.50 metres high. To illuminate a small tree, an outdoor spotlight should emit around 600 lumens. As far as light colour is concerned, the following applies: daylight white emphasises blue-green foliage colours, warm white emphasises brown-red leaves.

Protection class IP65 is sufficient for free-standing surface-mounted spotlights. On the other hand, recessed spotlights in the ground that illuminate the tree must have at least IP67 protection. This protects them against temporary submersion.

As part of the smart home, there are numerous possibilities, e.g. coupling with separate motion detectors, creating light scenes and, above all, complete operation via app, voice or - depending on the system - with remote control.

Solar lights work without cables. As the tree lighting is not safety-relevant, you can rely on the battery charge without hesitation. The lights can usually be set using a timer or twilight sensor.

Illuminating trees from below
A lush tree crown invites you to make it look particularly vivid and voluminous. But the tree trunk itself can also be staged as a linear, vertical design element. If the trunk has a clearly structured bark, it is worth emphasising the texture. Remember: wide-beam luminaires (flood, approx. 60° to 100° beam angle) are more suitable for the treetop, whereas a narrow-beam luminaire (spot, up to max. beam angle) is better for the trunk. 45° beam angle). How can you illuminate a tree from below?

A single upward-facing spotlight emphasises the tree crown in a three-dimensional way and emphasises the depth. Several overlapping cones of light reduce the shadow cast, making the treetop appear more voluminous.

Recessed ground lights blend almost invisibly into the garden landscape. As they can be partially submerged in water, they require at least Protection class IP67, high-quality underground cables, effective drainage and a suitable gravel bed for drainage.

Pendant lights have an atmospheric and stylish effect. It is important that the branch is thick enough to support the weight of the pendant light. They should also never be hung from the top of a branch, as this can damage the tree. Hanging lights for the tree generally have an IP44 protection rating.

Light nets utilise the volume of trees and bushes to give them an all-round sparkle. This invites you to look and relax, which is why light nets are often found in the outdoor areas of restaurants, where they inspire people to sit together for hours. You can also do this at home.

Illumination of shrubs, bushes and hedges
Illuminated shrubs, bushes and hedges can significantly enhance the visual dimension of the garden. The eye wanders from one green highlight to the next. It is particularly important to pay attention to the light emission of hedges bordering the garden. If you illuminate a hedge, you may not also illuminate the neighbouring property. In particular, avoid shining light into neighbouring windows. Disturbing light emissions from tree and property lighting often cause neighbourhood disputes.
