When were the original Sputnik lamps developed?

The Sputnik hanging lamp is the characteristic lamp of the Space Age - an era that celebrated its meteoric rise with the launch of the Sputnik I space probe in 1957. People developed an immense enthusiasm for rocket and space technology, which was soon reflected in luminaire design.

In the former GDR, the designs, which were actually reminiscent of satellites, were nicknamed dandelion lamps.

What characterises the design of the Sputnik lamp?

Sputnik lamps are multi-flame luminaires that resemble a satellite or star formation. Metal struts distribute the light sources from a central core in a criss-cross pattern in all directions.

This turns the Sputnik lamp into an interesting light sculpture that offers a different image from every angle and thus creates excitement.

This is known as the orbit effect.

What colours are Sputnik lamps available in?

Sputnik lights are a trend object and are the focus of many well-known lighting designers, including By Rydéns from Sweden. From elegant sand-white struts and smoked glass and copper shades to a modern black and gold look, many modern colour trends are also represented in the Sputnik lamps.

The classic Sputnik lamp sometimes had colourful sockets or was designed in black and gold - anticipating the trend of our time. Chrome or brass versions were also very popular.

Which light sources are suitable for Sputnik lamps?

Many traditional Sputnik luminaires were fitted with the compact but powerful G9 bulbs. This is still the case today, except that the more energy-efficient G9 LED lamps are used instead of halogen. Sputnik lamps with E27 socket are also available. These are now fitted with LED filament lamps, which look similar to incandescent lamps but have all the advantages of LEDs.
