The lamp as a light source & design object

From light bulbs to smart light sources

Even in times of LEDs, which are over 90 % more economical, the traditional incandescent lamp is still the epitome of cosy light and stylish design. Modern LED alternatives are therefore often modelled on the "light bulb" in terms of design and lighting quality - and improve them in every respect.

Advantages of LED light sources:

  • Up to 90 per cent more cost-saving compared to incandescent lamps
  • With LED lamps of the new energy efficiency class A even over 90 %
  • Over 60 % energy & cost savings compared to halogen lamps
  • Up to 50,000 hours service life
  • Compatible with regular sockets
  • 100 % bright as soon as it is switched on

Light source of efficiency class A:

With the 2021 energy label, all electrical appliances, lamps and lights were given a new energy efficiency class. The highest efficiency class A initially remained empty.

Thanks to progress in the production of highly efficient LED light sources, there are now also light sources with the new EEK A. These achieve up to 200 lm/W compared to "normal" LED lamps, making them twice as energy-efficient and cost-saving as a normal LED (up to 100 lm/W luminous efficacy).

Converting to LED:

LED lamps have the same standardised bases as their predecessors from incandescent to halogen lamps. They are called retrofits. For example, a light bulb with an E27 base can be easily replaced with an LED lamp for the corresponding socket.

For the usual brightness, there are comparative values in the product details and on the packaging. Where watts used to be relevant, the lumen value is now decisive.

Replacing light bulbs for a smart home

A smart light source is all you need to get started with a smart home. The smart light bulb alternative is simply inserted into the normal socket and, depending on the product, can be immediately illuminated and dimmed in your favourite colours. Controlled via app, voice control or a smart switch.

Retro lamps

These light sources bring retro flair and a good dose of nostalgia into our living spaces: from the filament lamp as a homage to the light bulb with its filament to smoked glass bulbs in Seventies style and bulb-shaped globe lamps, these light sources in warm white light colour bring a cosy flair into our rooms. Nothing more than a socket or a transparent shade is needed for cosy flair.

Variety of shapes

LED light sources that replicate the shape and properties of the beloved light bulb are an integral part of our lighting design. But LED can do more: manufacturers such as Segula, Calex & Co. are producing ever more creative shapes and lighting effects. It is often not visible at first glance that it is simply a light source and not even a lampshade.

Incandescent lamp facts & what LED lamps can do today

Light bulb facts
The origin of the light bulb

Thomas Alva Edison is regarded as the inventor of the light bulb. In fact, they already existed - without a brilliant marketing idea. In 1880, Edison patented the incandescent lamp, perfected it and invested in the creation of an electricity grid.

Light bulb facts
Structure of a light bulb

The glass bulb (1) prevents the filament (2) from burning due to the oxygen content in the ambient air. The base (3) fixes the light source in the socket and enables electrical contact. Modern LED filament lamps imitate the appearance of incandescent filaments.

Light bulb facts
A pleasant colour temperature

Incandescent lamps had a warm white light with a colour temperature below 3,300 Kelvin. This has a very cosy and comfortable effect in living rooms. When buying LED lamps, you therefore pay attention to this colour temperature for the perfect feel-good ambience.

Light bulb facts
Dimmable for beautiful flair

Incandescent lamps were always dimmable. Not all LEDs can be dimmed, but dimming itself is easier, e.g. via smart LED lamps with a built-in dimming device that is controlled by app or voice.

Light bulb facts
100% brightness when switching on

Like the incandescent lamp, the LED immediately reaches its maximum light output. This also makes the light source suitable for passageways where the light must shine brightly immediately, e.g. stairs and corridors.

Light bulb facts
Fits thanks to standardised base

Modern LED lamps (like incandescent lamps) have standardised sockets, e.g. E27, GU10 or G9. These LED light sources are called retrofits. They fit into the socket of your favourite pendant, ceiling or table lamp just like the old bulb.
