Lamps for large rooms
Large and high-ceilinged rooms, especially in old flats, can be designed in a variety of ways with lighting. They offer space for different lighting zones, such as separate work areas or cosy seating corners. Ceiling and pendant luminaires provide ambient lighting in large rooms. Floor and table lamps as well as attractive ambient lighting in the form of LED strips, for example, complete the cosy lighting concept.

New lights for large roomsHow bright does a lamp need to be for large rooms?
For large living spaces, you should aim for around 100 to 150 lumens per square metre. For a room measuring 4 x 7 metres with 21 square metres, basic lighting of between 2,100 and 3,150 lumens would therefore be appropriate. This could be achieved, for example, with a multi-flame ceiling light with 4 x 800 lumens (equivalent to 4 x 60 watt incandescent lamps). With pendant luminaires and high ceilings, it is important to ensure that they are suspended at around 2 metres above the floor. The lumen value is specified for each light source and for lights with permanently installed LEDs in the product details.

Expert tip
In large rooms, several light sources should be combined to create a good basic brightness as well as specific light zones and, last but not least, atmosphere. A central ceiling light can serve as the main light source, while wall and floor lamps brighten up and emphasise specific areas such as the reading corner. The result is a harmonious lighting concept that is precisely customised to your needs and tastes.
