The most important aspects for home office lighting
You don't have to be a technology expert to find the right lights for your home office. However, if you familiarise yourself with a few technical aspects, you can get the maximum lighting ambience out of your personal workspace.
)
The unit of measurement lumen provides information about the brightness of a lamp or luminaire. While lighting design in the office is based on lux, we make things easier for ourselves in the home office and stick to the rule of thumb: 100-150 lm/m² for general lighting in the room and an additional 400-500 lumens for lighting the desk.
)
Depending on the colour temperature - measured in Kelvin - white light appears warmer or cooler. Universal white (3,300-5,300 K) is recommended for working from home during the day. Switching to warm white light (<3,300 K) in the evening supports the recovery phase. Light sources with a variable light colour (CCT function) are ideal.
)
The home office lighting is usually on for several hours a day. It is therefore worth replacing old light sources with more energy-efficient ones. For comparison: incandescent lamps produce 10 lumens per watt. LEDs, on the other hand, produce around 100 lumens, while current LED lamps in energy efficiency class A even produce 200 lumens per watt.

A lighting concept for the home office
A good lighting concept in the home office combines bright ambient lighting with appropriate zone lighting. Of course, atmospheric ambient lighting can also be used in the personal study, for example to discreetly illuminate pictures on the walls. A good ratio of direct and indirect light creates comfortable, pleasant lighting conditions. For this reason, several light sources are also used simultaneously in the home office.
)
LED panels provide large-area, homogeneous light and are discreet and professional in terms of design. LED panels are therefore particularly suitable for general lighting in the home office.
)
The most uncomplicated option for good zone lighting is the desk lamp. To avoid shadows, it is positioned on the left side for right-handers and on the right side for left-handers.
)
An office free-standing luminaire with an integrated direct/indirect component provides both bright ambient lighting and appropriate zone lighting. The U-shaped base means it can be positioned to save space.
What additional features are available for home office lamps?
In terms of ease of use and increased personal efficiency, home office luminaires can now easily keep up with a commercial office. Modern technologies such as smart homes can also significantly reduce electricity consumption - a factor that should not be neglected when working from home for several hours a day.
)
HCL luminaires are already very popular in the commercial sector. With these, the light and colour temperature automatically adapt to the course of daylight, providing light that promotes concentration during the day and lighting that supports the recovery phase in the evening. The light has a positive effect on the circadian rhythm. HCL can be simulated in the private home office - with smart light sources or products with CCT control.
)
In the home office, smart luminaires can make everyday working life more comfortable and efficient. For example, daily lighting routines can be programmed with integration into the intelligent home. In addition to control via app or mobile phone, smart, wireless switches, for example, also offer convenience, calling up exactly the right lighting scenario at the touch of a button - e.g. during a break at work.
)
If a product such as an LED panel or a desk lamp has a CCT function, the colour temperature of the light can be changed at any time. In line with the modern HCL concept, activating daylight white can be easily set in the morning, concentration-enhancing universal white during the day and relaxation-enhancing warm white in the evening.
)
In commercial offices, especially in open-plan offices, free-standing office luminaires with presence detectors are frequently used. If the employee is not at work, the light switches off after a short time - the luminaire thus saves electricity. This can also be used in the home office to reduce electricity costs. For example, you don't have to remember to switch off the light temporarily during the break.
)
If there's one thing that's always with you in modern office life, it's your smartphone. And to ensure that this does not require an additional socket when charging, many desk lamps have a practical charging function - either via a USB slot or with an inductive Qi charging surface. With the latter, the smartphone is simply charged wirelessly via the surface of the light.
)
A little more storage space for notepads, a coffee cup, mobile phone or magazines is almost always needed in the home office. This is where luminous multi-talents come into play, e.g. wall lights that have an additional shelf surface on which something can be conveniently placed. These sophisticated, stylish lights combine several functions in a single item of furniture.
In which styles can I design my home office?
The full spectrum of modern styles is available in the home office, especially for desk lamps. In contrast to a fixed workplace in the office, the working day in the home office can be more individualised and therefore more motivating.
)
Straightforward, filigree and with surprising details: this also characterises the modern style of desk lamps. Most modern lights today use permanently installed LEDs with minimal energy consumption. LEDs integrate compactly into the design, are durable and have a high switching resistance so that frequent switching on and off hardly affects their durability.
)
The banker's lamp symbolises the classic desk lamp. With its green, rectangular shade and the often brass-coloured frame, it looks very classy on the desk. In the home office, it impresses with its style and efficiency. In addition to the classic banker's lamp, there are other designs that can influence the effect of the desk.

The cosy style from the far north does not come with eye-catching patterns that can be distracting in everyday office life. The classic: lights with a wooden base and white shade.
)
Bauhaus luminaires were designed for maximum efficiency. The classic in the design-oriented office is therefore Bauhaus-style luminaires - characterised by timelessness, functionality and elegance. Probably the best-known lamp from the German design school founded by Walter Gropius over 100 years ago is the Wagenfeld table lamp - a benchmark for modern design.
)
What works in the living area also works in the home office: the retro look combines stylish design with a pinch of nostalgia. Being surrounded by the spirit of the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies at work - that provides variety on the desk. Retro focuses on expressive colours and striking geometric shapes without frills.

As soon as the teenager's room becomes a study and workroom during the school years, glare-free and efficient desk lighting is a must. Timeless design for a small budget characterises the lights in your first "home office". It is not uncommon for the lights to be taken into the first flat or shared flat.
