Tips for the right children's room lighting

Growing up healthy and secure

Our youngest children should feel completely at ease in the nursery. We achieve this with a cosy lighting ambience and special light zones, e.g. for reading, doing homework or playing. This creates a lively environment that gives our children room for new interests and enables them to grow up healthily.

A small lighting lexicon for the children's room

Lumen

Describes the brightness of a light source. A comparison using watts no longer works today. Bright light sources for ceiling lights have approx. 800 lumen. Light source for table lamps approx. 400 lumen. For the basic lighting in the children's room we calculate approx. 100-150 lumens per m². To achieve this level of brightness, multi-flame ceiling lights are often used.

Kelvin

Describes the colour temperature of a light source, i.e. how the light appears in the room. LED lamps are available in all light colours, which is why we need to pay attention when buying them. A distinction is made between: Cosy warm white (<3.300 Kelvin), Universalweiss zum Arbeiten (3.300 – 5.300 Kelvin) und kühleres Tageslichtweiss (>5,300 Kelvin), which is not recommended for children's rooms.

Colour rendering

Refers to the quality in which colours of objects are reproduced in the artificial light of the illuminant. Very good colour rendering, also known as CRI (Colour Rendering Index), is Ra 80, Ra 90 or Ra 100. This value is particularly important in children's rooms so that, for example, items of clothing, wall paints, drawings, paintings and book illustrations appear in rich colours.

What light do I need for my child's room?

The basic elements

Balanced lighting in a child's room consists of ambient lighting and several light zones for different activities such as reading and doing homework. There is also accent lighting - the dim, cosy light that children love.

Basic lighting

The "big light" for orientation and well-being is also generated in the children's room by ceiling lights (or all-round children's room pendant lights). As there is a lot of activity and the world is often "upside down", the light sources should never dazzle when you look up at the luminaire. Concealed light sources - e.g. fabric shades - provide indirect, glare-free light. In the case of multi-flame spotlights, these should be rotated so that they cannot be seen from the front.

Basics: <3,300 Kelvin colour temperature for maximum cosiness and approx. 100-150 lumens per m².

Light for the desk and for learning

Writing their first lines, adding numbers and learning new things are all part of everyday life for children aged 6 and over. Children need a desk lamp with directional light for this. With universal white 3,300 - 5,300 Kelvin, this should be somewhat more objective than the ambient lighting to promote concentration.

Shadow-free trick: To avoid annoying shadows, the desk lamp is placed on the left for right-handers and on the right for left-handers.

Cosy and snug with decorative lights

Fairy lights, glowing baubles, LED candles and other decorative light sources make the children's room really cosy. Here too, the colour temperature should be below 3,300 Kelvin - the lower, the cosier, because the red component of the light source then increases and the light appears warmer.

Wireless tip: Desk lamp, bedside lamp, stereo system and video game console - even in the children's room there are not an infinite number of sockets. But battery-powered lights are now available in all shapes and colours, e.g. the portable Light2Go.

Light for reading

Snuggling up in bed and immersing themselves in their new favourite book quickly becomes an exciting adventure for many children. A bedside lamp belongs by the bed for this purpose.

The subtle difference: In contrast to the directional light of the desk lamp, this should have a light that shines all round. In addition, the light should shine softly and glare-free through a fabric shade or satinised lampshade.

Classic socket nightlights

They are still a reliable choice for safe orientation in the dark: socket nightlights. From any socket - ideally directly at the door - they emit warm white light that does not disturb you while you sleep and provides sufficient brightness when you wake up.

Safety plus: Socket nightlights are also particularly important in corridors near stairs.

Night lights to go

They are real all-round companions: nightlights with glowing favourite motifs. They don't need a plug and don't have a cable, but work on battery power, so you can easily take them with you when you have to go to the toilet at night.

Buddy light: As only a few LEDs light up in them, they don't get so warm that you can't take them under the duvet. And they are also included as companions when playing - even with a harmonious RGB colour change, depending on the product.

What to look out for in children's room lighting?

Safe light in the children's room
  • Glare-free Choose lights with "invisible" light sources or light sources with fewer lumens
  • **Careful, hot! Choose luminaires where children cannot touch the light source
  • Only intact lights Parents are responsible for regularly checking the cable, socket, light and lamp
  • Mercury-free Energy-saving light bulbs have no place in children's rooms - LEDs, on the other hand, are harmless
  • Shatterproof Things can break when children are running around, which is why children's rooms should be equipped with plastic LED lamps instead of glass lamps, for example
