Birger Dahl

Birger Dahl & the love of form

Timeless cult lamps Birdy & Dokka

He is regarded as a pioneer and trailblazer of contemporary Scandinavian lighting design. Birger Dahl (1916-1998) also made a name for himself as an interior and industrial designer in the middle of the last century. We know his most famous lighting creations today under the names Birdy and Dokka.

New vision of lighting design

Playful designs and ornate details were not part of Birger Dahl's repertoire of design language. For him, geometric shapes such as cones, circles and cylinders were the defining stylistic elements with which he gave expression to his lighting designs. By focussing on the purity of form, he always placed the object itself at the centre of attention - one more reason why his designs are still timeless masterpieces in modern interiors today.

Dokka: Timeless & versatile

Focus on Norwegian design

As head designer at the Norwegian electronics company Sønnico, Birger Dahl created a true design classic, the Dokka pendant lamp, in 1954. It was the first Norwegian luminaire to be awarded a gold medal at the Triennale di Milano. From this point onwards, Norwegian design increasingly became the focus of international interest. Today, Dokka is offered by the lighting company Northern in a variety of colours - from petrol to yellow.

Birdy: Classic Scandi flair

Simple and beautiful design language

In 1952, Birger Dahl designed the Birdy table lamp - at that time still under the name s-30016. From then on, it was produced and distributed for many years by the electronics manufacturer Sønnico. It was not until 2013 that s-30016 was reissued in a new edition by the young Norwegian design company Northern and given its current, distinctive name. The iconic Birdy lamp is available in various colours as a table, floor and wall lamp and is a symbol of classic Scandinavian design.

Dahl: Symbiosis of glass & brass

Design highlight from the past

To mark the centenary of Birger Dahl's (1916-1998) birth, Northern launched a lamp on the market that he had already designed in 1956. He originally designed the pendant light for the Norwegian parliament. Today it bears the name Dahl - simply named after its creator Birger Dahl. Like all of the designer's creations, the hand-blown glass lamp follows simple geometric shapes and, like Birdy and Dokka, is a timeless classic that fits perfectly into modern interiors.

More about Northern

The young design company Northern was founded by Ove Rogne in Oslo in 2005. Although still relatively young, it already has a broad fan base all over the world. The secret of the Northern range: the fascinating combination of Scandinavian design and lifestyle with casual, modern coolness. In addition to re-editions by Birger Dahl, the pioneer of Norwegian lighting design, the range includes characteristic lamps such as the Heat pendant lamp by designer Johanna Forsberg, the Balancer wall lamp by Yuue and the Oslo Wood floor lamp by Ove Rogne.
