Bathroom lighting

A modern illuminated bathroom combines several light sources. Each serves a specific purpose. A ceiling light or recessed spotlights are essential for bright bathroom lighting. Mirror lights or furniture lights, on the other hand, provide good visual comfort for daily care. There are also other options for customising the bathroom lighting.

IP protection

Can any light be installed in the bathroom?

The bathroom is a wet room. This is why there are also clear requirements for the luminaires used in the private sector. The bathroom is categorised into protection zones 0 to 3 for this purpose.

  • Protection zone 0: Only lights with a safety extra-low voltage of up to 12 volts and a minimum protection rating of IPX7 may be used in shower and bath tubs.
  • Protection zone 1: Within the vertical boundary up to 2.25 metres from the bath or shower, only luminaires with protective extra-low voltage up to 12 volts that are protected against water jets, i.e. at least IPX5, are permitted.
  • Protection zone 2: 60 cm adjacent to protection zone 1, only luminaires with IPX4 or higher may be used.

Also allowed:

  • Transformers must not be used in protection areas 0 and 1.
  • Socket outlets and switches must not be placed in protection zones 0, 1 and 2.

Mirror lights for the bathroom

Best visual comfort for the bathroom routine

The daily skincare routine includes applying make-up, shaving and brushing your teeth. Mirror lights are used to ensure that the face is illuminated without shadows. Modern bathroom lighting with LEDs in particular has a translucent diffuser made of plastic or opal glass above the light source. This ensures that the light does not dazzle and therefore provides the best visual comfort.

Ceiling lighting in the bathroom

A bright bathroom at any time of day

The ceiling lighting in the bathroom makes the room appear larger and friendlier and provides full-surface brightness from the shower to the washbasin. If you are in the bathroom, the ceiling light is almost always switched on. It is therefore particularly worthwhile to either use permanently integrated LEDs for this light source or to convert to an LED light source. This saves energy and costs efficiently.

Recessed lights for the bathroom

Stylish and functional bathroom lighting

Recessed spotlights installed in suspended ceilings are a modern way of illuminating the bathroom. Smaller bathrooms also appear larger thanks to recessed lights, as they are embedded directly into the architecture and therefore do not take up any space. The inside of the bathtub or shower can also be illuminated, but here the safety regulations of DIN VDE 0100 Part 701 must be observed very carefully and appropriately protected lights must be selected. As with other lights, we recommend installation by an electrician.

Illuminated mirrors

Multifunctional light for the bathroom

Bathroom mirrors that have an integrated light source thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology are extremely practical and decorative. Multicolour and CCT functions bring additional variety to the bathroom for all moods. We don't just enjoy illuminated mirrors when they are mounted on the wall. The illuminated table make-up mirror is also a popular accessory. It becomes particularly multifunctional when the whole thing, including make-up case, finds its way into our wellness oasis.

Pendant lights around the washbasin

The special eye-catcher

A pendant light is an alternative with eye-catching qualities for the area around the washbasin. It also comes into its own in the relaxation area next to the bath in a larger spa bath. From simple models made of metal or glass to eye-catching designs, there are numerous options to complement the bathroom decor. Of course, the light should be mounted so that it does not hang in the way. They fit perfectly into the lighting concept above washbasins or areas that are not walked on directly.

More lighting tips for bathroom lighting

Indirect lighting in the bathroom

Modern bathroom lighting uses indirect light to create a particularly stylish bathroom ambience. Indirect light in the bathroom creates an all-round feel-good atmosphere. LED strips, which can be easily installed behind mirrors, on shelves and chests of drawers, are particularly popular. Depending on the LED strip, the light shines in a single colour, in different shades of white or even in all imaginable colours.

How can I save energy and costs in the bathroom?

LED lighting technology has long since replaced traditional lighting solutions in the bathroom, such as fluorescent lamps. LED saves energy and costs, the light sources need to be replaced less frequently or not at all and, thanks to their switching stability, frequent switching on and off of the LED makes little difference. In addition, LEDs do not contain mercury, so they can be used even more safely.

Which light in the shower?

The shower and bathtub are classed as protection zone 0 and may only be fitted with luminaires with an IP protection rating of at least IP67. These lights are protected against temporary submersion. Luminaires that are to be installed directly above the bath and shower (in protection zone 1) must be at least jet-proof - i.e. at least IP65.

Customised light in the bathroom - with CCT or Smart Home

Start the day with energising daylight white and enjoy a sleep-inducing, warm white light in the bathroom in the evening: This lighting comfort can be achieved with bathroom lights that can be dimmed and can change the light colour from daylight white to cosy warm white. This so-called CCT function is integrated in many bathroom lights. One alternative is smart light sources that offer numerous options for customising the lighting ambience - including lighting routines that automatically accompany us from dawn to dusk. Retrofitting smart lighting often starts quite simply with replacing a light source.
