Smart sockets, or smart plugs as they’re otherwise known, are used to integrate wired electrical appliances into a smart home system. By doing this, your standard table and floor lamps, table fans, coffee machines and, other electrical devices can be controllable via a Smartphone app.
With a smart socket, a standard floor or table lamp becomes part of the smart home.
Electrical appliances such as a fan or coffee machine can also be integrated via a Smart Plug.
Several light sources or devices can be networked via a smart socket adapter.
A smart plug works like an adapter. It’s plugged into the socket and then integrated into the Smart Home either via WLAN, which allows it to be operated from any location, or via Bluetooth, which doesn’t require an internet connection.
Application example: If the table lamp in a child's bedroom is equipped with a Wi-Fi Smart Plug, the light can be controlled and switched on or off by the parents from the living room.
Most well-known smart home systems include a smart socket in their range, for example, Homematic IP, Brennenstuhl, Innr, Ledvance und natürlich Philips Hue.
For outdoor areas, there are special smart plugs available with a higher IP protection rating of IP44. The regular smart plugs with IP20 or less are for indoor use only as they lack moisture and foreign object protection.
