Does the house number have to be illuminated?
This is decided by the municipality. Whilst the affixing of house numbers is generally mandatory in Germany, all related regulations vary from place to place.
The fact is that an illuminated house number makes it much easier for postmen and, of course, ambulances, the police and fire brigade to find their way around. At the very least, there is nothing wrong with an additional house number light.
All house numbers should be positioned so that they are clearly visible from the public highway.
Our recommendation: Contact your local authority if you want to change your house number. This is because there is a risk of fines if local regulations are violated.
What needs to be considered with house number lights with motion detectors?
Illuminated house numbers with integrated motion detector save energy. However, it is advisable to choose a product that always illuminates the house number and only operates an additional light source via a motion detector.
This is because if the house number were only illuminated when movement is detected, the person must already be in the vicinity of the entrance. This would defeat the purpose of the house number light.
However, house number lights with twilight sensor are a good choice for greater energy savings. This ensures that the lighting switches on automatically when darkness falls and switches off again at dawn.
How are house number lights supplied with electricity?
Many illuminated house numbers nowadays have integrated LED lighting. Compared to other lighting technologies, LEDs consume significantly less energy. If the house number light has a socket, a modern LED light source is also advisable here.
There are also many house number lights with solar panels. It is important to ensure that these are of a high-quality design, as otherwise the lighting may remain switched off in the dark season due to a lack of solar energy and a good battery.
When installing the panel, it is also important to ensure that it is not covered by canopies or the shade of trees, for example, and that it is kept as clean as possible so that it can optimally absorb energy.
Are there house number lights in different designs?
Similar to outdoor wall lights, models made of robust, easy-care stainless steel are also popular for house number lights. However, anthracite-coloured designs or those with glass elements are also very interesting.
Please note that many local authorities have regulations regarding the size, material and colour of house numbers. Find out in advance from your local authority to avoid unnecessary fines.
