Surface-mounted ceiling lights for outside provide large-area, uniform lighting for the house entrance, garage entrance, terrace, balcony or carport.
Glare-free light is generally provided by Diffusers, i.e. satinised lampshades through which the light can shine brightly but also softly. In addition, surface-mounted ceiling lights are not only purely functional, but also have an extremely inviting effect thanks to their pleasant light colour (warm white, 2,700 to 3,300 Kelvin) and not least their modern design.
A power outlet under a canopy is a prerequisite for installing a surface-mounted ceiling light outdoors. The outdoor light is connected directly to the mains supply and, unlike outdoor recessed lights, does not require a cavity.
Important note: Installation should always be carried out by an electrician due to the numerous safety regulations.
Surface-mounted ceiling lights for outdoors are constantly exposed to weather conditions and therefore require special protection against moisture and foreign bodies. This is coded in the IP protection class (Ingress Protection) and differs from luminaire to luminaire. The minimum for outdoor areas is protection class IP44. This means they are protected against splash water and solid foreign bodies ≥ 1 mm.
Further IP protection types and their meaning can easily be found in this table:
Digit IP4X4 | Protection against foreign bodies |
---|---|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 50 mm |
2 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 12.5 mm |
3 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 2.5 mm |
4 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 1 mm |
5 | Dustproof |
6 | Dustproof |
Digit IP4X | Protection against moisture |
---|---|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protected against vertically impinging dripping water |
2 | Protected against dripping water at an angle |
3 | Protected against water spray |
4 | Protected against splash water |
5 | Protected against water jets |
6 | Protected against strong water jets |
7 | Protected against temporary submersion |
8 | Protected against permanent submersion |
You can find more information on the types of protection in our IP protection types guide.
With motion detectors, the light switches on automatically when you approach the carport or the house entrance and switches off again depending on the set light duration. This additional feature is also available for surface-mounted ceiling lamps for outdoor areas. Mostly infrared sensors are used, which measure moving heat sources and are usually coupled with a twilight sensor as standard. This switches the light on only at dusk and in the dark.
Two further advantages of surface-mounted lights with motion detectors: reduced energy consumption and increased home security against break-ins. This is because lights that switch on spontaneously can deter burglars or alert neighbours. To ensure that this works perfectly, it is worthwhile having a second person help with the installation to check the correct detection angle by walking up and down.
LEDs are also a very good choice for outdoor areas. Modern LED lighting technology really comes into its own when combined with a motion detector. This is because LEDs are immediately 100% bright and are more stable than all other light sources. This means that even frequent switching on and off does not damage the light sources. In addition, LEDs are energy-saving and long-lasting.
Numerous surface-mounted ceiling lights for outdoors are available with permanently installed LED technology, making flat, particularly modern designs possible. The light sources in conventional luminaires with sockets can easily be replaced with suitable LED lamps. Our expert demonstrates this using an interior light as an example:
