R7s bulbs were originally halogen rod bulbs. They have a base with recessed contacts on both sides and are used in outdoor and indoor luminaires.
With high wattages of up to several thousand watts and 360° light emission, halogen spotlights provide floodlighting that can be used to illuminate buildings, operate powerful construction spotlights and even illuminate sports fields. In the home, R7s halogen lamps are used in ceiling, pendant and wall luminaires and above all ceiling washlights.
R7s lamps are available in the lengths 78 mm, 118 mm and 189 mm for the various areas of application. With their brilliant light and dimmability, for which halogen lamps are generally known, as well as their high colour rendering, R7s halogen lamps are unrivalled.
The R7s socket, which has become less common than E27, E14 or G9, for example, is now mainly used in designer living room lights. Well-known luminaires include the Pirce by Giuseppe Maurizio Scutellà (Artemide), the Lola by Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto (Luceplan) and the Caboche by Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto (Foscarini). Some old-school ceiling washlights and outdoor lights also use the R7s socket.
Suitable R7s LED lamps can be used with all these lights.
However, when used in a professional environment, e.g. in industry, R7s LED light sources have a limitation compared to halogen rod lamps: due to the thin and short rod-like design, there is not enough surface area available to place enough LEDs and generate a similarly high luminous flux as with halogen rods. R7s LED lamps therefore cannot achieve such a high maximum brightness as halogen rod lamps.
By way of comparison, an industrial luminaire with an R7s halogen lamp could generate a luminous flux of 30,000 lumens with a wattage of 1,500 watts, for example. A similar luminous flux would not be possible with LEDs due to the heat sinks required. However, R7s LED lamps, for example, achieve 2,500 lumens with a power consumption of around 15-20 watts, which is more than enough power** for domestic lighting.
When replacing conventional R7s rod lamps with LED alternatives, you gain a longer service life, good to very good colour rendering properties, a comfortable light colour of <3,300 Kelvin and significant energy savings.
Please note: If the light source is to be dimmable, special dimmable R7s LED lamps must be selected, as not all LED lamps are dimmable.
