E27 LED lamps: so that the old light doesn't have to leave the field just yet

E27 LED lamps are practical, environmentally friendly, energy-saving and modern. And also offer plenty of nostalgic charm. They only exist because the light bulb has disappeared from our everyday lives, but our favourite lights with E27 sockets are still around. At least some of them. And of course they want to be converted to LED. This is why there are E27 LED lamps - so-called retrofit lamps.

What does E27 actually stand for?

The E-base owes its name to Thomas Alva Edison. One of the two standard bases for light bulbs is the E27 base. The other is the E14 base. What does the 27 stand for? This number provides information about the diameter of the base: namely 27 millimetres.

What size E27 LED lamps are?

You can easily find this in the product details in our shop: Length and diameter of the bulb are noted there and can vary greatly from light source to light source. The classic bulb shape, for example, cannot be compared with a candle lamp. It is therefore always best to measure the dimensions of your luminaire beforehand.

How many watts does my E27 LED lamp need?

You are probably used to always having to look at the wattage of your light bulb. A 60-watt light bulb, for example, was standard. Those days are over. The electrical output of light sources is specified in watts. However, it is definitely not suitable for comparison. This is why old incandescent lamps are invariably compared by luminous flux with new LED lamps. A 60-watt light bulb, for example, had a luminous flux of 806 lumens.

Since it's hard to get rid of old habits, you say: "Everything was easier with watts!" Our tip: So that you can find the right lamps even in the old way of thinking with 25, 40, 60 watts and the like, comparative values to conventional lamps are displayed in our shop. These can of course also be found on the packaging.

Why is my E27 LED bulb humming?

What is that strange humming noise? If it is not your stomach and you have localised it in a luminaire, the following could have gone wrong: The lamp may be operated with the wrong dimmer or it may even be a non-dimmable LED lamp that you are trying to dim. You need to know: Non-dimmable lamps must not be operated with a dimmer. Otherwise the dimmer and lamp may break. Our expert advisors will be happy to tell you how to find the right dimmer for your dimmable lamp. Simply ring through using the contact details below.

Are dimmable E27 LED lamps also available without a dimmer?

Does it have to work simply and easily without a lot of accessories? Then you'll be pleased to hear that there are actually some light sources that can be dimmed simply via the conventional wall switch. All that is required is a switch - and not a dimmer. If a dimmer is already installed, it only needs to be replaced with a switch. Tip: The SceneSwitch lamps from Philips are recommended, for example. Using the light switch, they can not only be dimmed, but the light colour can also be changed.

What beam angle do I need for my luminaire?

How big should the light cone of your lamp be, you ask? A rough distinction is made between three beam angles - suitable for different applications:

  • narrow beam: for spots on pictures and sculptures
  • centre wide distribution: to emphasise certain areas of a room
  • wide distribution: for ambient lighting in living areas

Tip: The distance of the light source from the object also plays a role. The further away, the larger the circle of light that is created.

What light colour do E27 LED lamps have?

You don't want to commit to a light colour? Let's understand. A model that can change the light colour is the right one for you. Simply use the "Light colour" filter in the shop to select whether it should be warm white, daylight white or perhaps multicolour.

You can choose between:

  • 2700 Kelvin → warm white (light colour as with a 60-watt incandescent lamp)
  • 3000 Kevin → warm white (slightly colder warm white)
  • 4000 Kelvin → universal white / neutral white (cool, white light for working)
  • 6500 Kelvin → daylight white (very cold, almost unpleasantly bluish light - not to be confused with natural daylight)
  • … and then there are also RGBW lamps, which can emit other colours in addition to white (this is what the W stands for) (multicolour function)

In what forms are E27 LED bulbs available?

You don't have to do without anything, not even the nostalgia factor inherent in the old light bulb. LED substitutes are now available in all designs of the conventional light bulb. It is therefore possible to make a 1:1 replacement of an incandescent lamp with an LED lamp. And everything stays as it was - except that you save energy and therefore money, no longer have to keep replacing the light source and protect the environment. So what are you waiting for?

Are E27 LED lamps suitable for luminaires with motion detectors?

As LED lamps are particularly switch-proof, they can also be used in luminaires with motion detectors. They harmonise perfectly, because what the motion detector needs is immediate brightness. And LED lamps can do this 100 per cent.

Are there also E27 LED lamps with remote control?

Do you like it cosy and comfortable? Controlling the light by remote control fits perfectly into this concept. You can be pleased: there are LED lamps that are already supplied with a remote control. Depending on the version, these lamps can be dimmed, switched, change colours, set a timer, call up effects and much more. Just give it a try.

Are filament E27 LED lamps also available?

Yes, they do exist - with real LED filaments à la light bulb. Only with LED. The lamps with the nostalgia factor are manufactured in the same design as conventional lamps and are therefore also practical retrofit lamps. Simply screw it into the old luminaire and you're ready to go.

Mirrored, matt, clear - everything included?

Of course! E27 lamps are available in all variants: in matt, clear and also as head mirror lamps. In the latter variant, the lamp head is mirrored. Ideal for open luminaires, as this ensures glare-free light. There is certainly no glare when looking directly into the light source.

Are coloured E27 LED bulbs also available?

People want to feel cosy and relax in their living rooms: Warm white, cosy light** from 2,700 Kelvin to 3,300 Kelvin is just right for this. In rooms such as the bathroom, kitchen and study, a universal white, functional light of 3,300 Kelvin to a maximum of 5,300 Kelvin is recommended. For utility rooms such as cellars and garages, daylight white light is best (more than 5,300). Ultimately, these are only recommendations - the best thing to do is simply test which light colour you feel most comfortable with and when. A lamp that can change the light colour is ideal for this.
