A wall light is not simply an alternative to a ceiling light. Of course, wall lamps provide light and can provide basic brightness. However, the wall light (correctly installed) is always in the field of vision. In contrast to the ceiling light, which is much less visible, it also becomes a design element.
Lampenwelt.de has some tips on how to select and install wall lights in the best possible way.
Think about it at the beginning: In what room and what do I need my new wall light for? Because there are wall lamps that are more decorative. Some are truly marvellous designer pieces. With these, light is part of the object. However, generating brightness then plays a subordinate role. There are also wall lights that tend to illuminate one area by using spotlights. And those that light up your kitchen single-handedly.
**Which of these do you need?
Wall luminaires can set the scene in two ways:** through their housing or through the modelling of the light. With modelled light, for example, light shines upwards and downwards in structured light cones. A great design feature for living rooms, dining rooms and the like, which no longer have to hide behind the fanciest restaurants and hotel lobbies!
The staging through the housing of the wall lamp, on the other hand, is a basic question: for which furnishing style do you need the luminaire? Wall lamps can be very simple and modern or be the shining highlight in the room. The first port of call for you is therefore the selection of style, e.g:
And that's not all! The material and shape of a wooden wall light can make it look as heavy as the furniture in an old manor house in the country. Or light and informal, like in a Scandinavian cottage, where every piece of furniture speaks of deceleration.
**Again the question: What would you like?
Apart from the power connections for the wall, are there none for the ceiling? Then you should choose bright wall luminaires with a high lumen\ figure that can provide basic brightness. Wall luminaires that shine upwards and downwards or towards the walls as a whole are ideal, as the light is then reflected and emitted into the room. This is referred to as indirect light.
Important for this: a light-coloured wall paint. Because dark colours "swallow" light.
These include wall lights fitted with a spot, for example, but also picture lights. Spots are used as an alternative to the classic bedside lamp as well as to illuminate sideboards, cosy armchairs, etc. With picture lights, the painting, the wall with holiday photos or similar is staged. In both cases, however, no background brightness is generated in the room.
The following generally applies: **Avoid looking directly into the light source, otherwise you could be dazzled. And that detracts from any living comfort! If the light outlet points upwards and downwards, for example, it is advisable to install it in the upper third of the wall, which is roughly at eye level.
At the same time, this ensures that the luminaire is optimally perceived in the room. With designer lights from well-known brands, this is the first topic of conversation when visiting friends and acquaintances.
But be careful: if there is a seat nearby, it should not be possible to look into the luminaire from there either. If in doubt, the choice of luminaire and its light outlets should be based on the situation in the room.
Of course, there are also wall lights that don't dazzle at all, such as those with a satinised shade. This covers the light sources just enough to prevent glare - but hardly reduces the brightness. This is particularly common with bathroom and mirror lights and LED lights.
In principle, a wall light should be installed in such a way that it is not possible to look directly into the light source either from below or from above. When installed around 5 cm above eye level, glare is virtually eliminated. As a rule, this results in a installation height of 1.70 m to 1.80 m.
During installation, the instructions in the relevant operating instructions and the safety instructions must be observed. Lampenwelt recommends having the installation professionally carried out by a qualified electrician. **Your safety comes first!
Then all you have to do is attach it to the wall. Wall lamps with plugs are also a good solution if you simply do not have or cannot install a power connection for the wall. In rented flats, for example, if you are simply not allowed to change the wiring. But you can always drill a few holes to fit a light with a cable and plug!
There are wall lights that can be mounted on the ceiling and ceiling lights that can be mounted on the wall. If this is the case, it is always included in the product descriptions of Lights.co.uk . And what use is the most beautiful ceiling light if you want to attach it to the wall - and the shade simply can't hold in this position?
