The Arc Floor Lamp: Create a New Lighting Experience with Curved Designs

arc floor lamp

Every type of light is developed for a purpose. The arc floor lamp was created to project light onto a table. Ceiling lights and hanging lights can do this too, however, the arc floor lamp can perform this task without even using a power connection on the ceiling, or having to set up an additional one.

The curved floor lamp which was brought to prominence in 1962 with the design icon Arco by the Castiglioni brothers, is today used for much more - beside reading chairs, seating areas and more, creating a wonderful island of light to read and relax.

How is an arc floor lamp assembled?

Assembling arc floor lamps is simple and generally a lot faster than installing a hanging light. Every overreach floor lamp comes with installation instructions - here is an example from the brand Lindby. These provide a quick and simple explanation of which parts are put, or screwed, together.

Since arced floor lamps can be very expansive, here are a few tips that you should bear in mind before making a purchase:

  • Measure the available space beforehand.

  • Want to light up dining areas? In this case, large arc floor lamps with a height and depth of at least 2 m will be needed. These allow you to walk around the table without the light getting in the way.

  • Want to light up reading areas? Choose an arced lamp with a depth of around 50 cm, so it can be positioned close to an armchair. Tip: An adjustable height ensures that the light can be adapted to suit your specific needs.

  • Have a sloping roof? You can use arc floor lamps as a substitute for hanging lights. In this instance, always pay attention to the height available beneath the slope.

What are the advantages of arc floor lamps with LEDs?

First of all, LEDs require up to 90% less energy than a traditional light bulb. On top of this, built-in LEDs are completely maintenance-free and can be integrated into the frame which allows to create super slim designs.

Note: For LED arced floor lamps it is particularly important to heed the luminous colour and colour rendering. The luminous colour ought to be warm white, less than 3,300 kelvins. Colour rendering is particularly important when the arc lamp is used as a substitute for a hanging light over a dining table. Only a colour rendering index of Ra 80 or higher will ensure optimal lighting for this purpose. High-quality LED products achieve these values effortlessly.

Are there dimmable arched floor lamps?

Please note that the dimmer is generally installed in the foot switch. Simply reaching out beside your chair and lowering the light output on the frame, as you would do for an uplighter, is not possible.

Which arc floor lamp is a real design classic?

Arco by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, available in the product range from FLOS, is an iconic design classic. Strictly speaking, we owe the development of overhang floor lamps to the work of these two men. The Arco model with its base made of Carrara marble and its elegant frame, is just as much in demand today as in 1962, when it was developed.

Are arc lamps also suitable for dining rooms?

Yes, it is - the very first arc lamp, Arco, was in fact designed specifically for this purpose. You don’t want to sidestep the floor lamp or fall over it which was only possible with a high, curved and expansive light: the arc lamp. A fantastic invention!

If you want to illuminate your dining table with a curved floor lamp as well, please choose a height and depth that will allow you to comfortably walk beneath the arc floor lamp.

Also, when choosing dining table lighting, ensure that you have:

  • a cosy, warm white luminous colour of less than 3,300 kelvins

  • a colour rendering index of at least Ra 80 to make your food look even more appetizing!
